i was on a post embargo, but as a locksmith i have to come out to say this:

you need 2, NOT 1, tools to pick a lock if it requires a key.

you need a turning wrench ( something to allow you to apply a turning force to the keyhole)

and you need the actual pick itself (something to push up the pins inside the lock)

with a hairpin or whatever it was you were using, you may be able to lift pins, but how do you expect to turn the lock mechanism? or you could call a locksmith, we never ask for proof that youre the owner of the house, especially if its a room inside a house. you could just say you lost the key to the spare room.
ive cracked safes and not even looked inside (privacy issues) but it couldve been stolen diamonds for all i know. just letting you know about
that.
but after you have the right tools, it is relatively easy to open a common indoor lock, they usually have 3-4 pins, some locks can have up to 8, unless its double sided, then youll never hand pick it

lastly you can look on the internet, or call you local locksmith and ask for a "pick gun". these are simply inserted into the lock above the turning wrench. apply a turning pressure to the lock in the direction the key turns and pull the trigger. the pick gun is a spring loaded snapping device that slams all the pins in a lock upward and with the applied pressure, you can easily open the hardest to pick locks.

hope that helps...

You could always just beat the door down. One or two shoulder shots should do it Wink
