So Gemma is going to the university...who's paying? She hasn't mentioned a job. She left the religion/cult/order and I assume that her parents are still members. As with most cults, I would assume that if she really had left the order, her parents would have cut her off. So where is her money coming from?
Did she really leave the cult, or is she lying to Bree about this?
On another note, even if her parents are funding school, I can't see them putting up the money for her to fly to America to visit some girl that they haven't seen for years. That would cost thousands of dollars. I think the "Gemma flying in and saving the day/shacking up with Jonas/etc." line of thinking would have to suspend reality a bit much.
Unless her parents get lost at sea and she inherits a butt load of money... |

Yeah, you can do that here as well. They don't pay for all the extras though. And I know they don't always pay for everything you actually need for school, either, depending on how much you qualify for.
But Gemma lives in a flat, right? Would a student loan pay for non-dormitory housing? (I know it wouldn't in the US) And what about food, clothing, etc.?
And a loan isn't going to be paying that air plane fare for her to come save the day, lol. |

I know in the US some universities in major cities purchase apartments or have deals with apartment owners so that they can be used as dorms when there isn't much available housing. Columbia in NYC for example. Also in college towns renters often offer lower rates for students because they get kickbacks from th university or from the state.
And I thought Gemma didn't really leave the order, it was just hard to convince them to let her go off on her own--i might be wrong but I thought she was still loosely affiliated with them? |

Depends on the type of loan you get. When I was in college, my husband and I lived off of our loans. We got Pell grants, some other grants, plus Stafford subsidized and unsubsidized loans--we took everything we could get, stashed most of it into an interest bearing savings account.
We were able to pay for our housing, food, books...all of it with that money. We both had small part-time jobs, so we lived off of the income and the interest on the loans.
We're now paying off the loans with the current interest on that money each month. It's all automatic...we're basically paying the government back with their own money with very little expense on our part. |

I dunno. She said she 'branched off.' That dosen't imply a complete seperation. Just growing in a differant direction from the the main root...but still apart of the root. The root is still her source and foundation. Since, she wasn't a 'chosen' child, branching off sounds like it was more of an option for her than let's say Bree. Gemma seems to be on good terms with her parents still, and I don't see why they wouldn't fund her education. It might've been conditional though. I wonder if she had much choice as to what she studied at the university. It seems they or the group they belong to might've had something to say about it. It also seems reasonable to me that the Group would allow some members to branch off. A group that wants power and influence is limited if they don't have members who can function and are integrated within main stream society.
Mmm, also, if Gemma is actually overseas, I agree. Asking for a little extra money would raise some questions. But, if her parents are part of a subgroup that isn't as supportive of those Order of Dendrah freaks, they might do a little creative accounting or have some independent wealth on the side that they're willing to dish out. But, honestly I don't know what to think about Gemma.

Why is Gemma helping Bree if she is still a part of the order? Wouldn't they get pissed off and try to stop her?
Obviously, is she is being watched, they know she's trying to help Bree. |

Is it not possible that she also has a job?
It's so expensive being a student here that most students study and have a part-time job. _________________ "You are disoriented. Blackness swims toward you like a school of eels who have just seen something that eels like a lot."

Absolutely possible. Maybe she just hasn't mentioned it. We only just found out that Daniel has a job at a gas station. |
