One of my favorite on-line radio stations, KGNU from Boulder, CO, is doing a show of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" covers. I just heard one by a Finnish oompah band (sung in Finnish), and now they're playing one that sounds like it's done on a music box. (The DJ is calling it a "lullaby version.")
If this twisted show sounds good to you, come listen! http://www.kgnu.org/ht/listencomp.html |

Yep. That's why I love it.
Right now they're playing an acoustic version by Willie Nelson. He makes it sound rather lonely and forlorn. |

Yeah, I thought that's what he said.
I like this one that's on now---a groovy "elevator music" kinda jazzy one. Hard to describe--"my lEEbEEto!" heee! |

Ooh, now they're playing a brand new version by Patti Smith. Very cool.
The DJ, Barry, says that this is the next to last version, and then they'll return to "real music." Which, on this show, includes things like Bob Dylan (or a really good imitator) singing "Green Eggs and Ham."

But wasn't that awesome, Mirage? |

I can't help but say that only people in Boulder would do something so crazy. Silly Boulderites. |

sounded like fun!
paul anka did a version of this on an album of covers last year. (and his big band version of oasis' wonderwall was great...seriously.). _________________ “Can't repeat the past? Why of course you can!” |

Surprisingly! I thought it was gonna just be..odd, but it ended up being really cool. What was up with that version after the jazzy one? Where it was just a couple of guys going "nanna na, na na, nanna na, na na"? Unfortunately I had to leave after that. |

Martha, I am either sorry or delighted to inform you that the KGNU folks actually stole -- er, borrowed -- the idea from April Winchell (scroll down for links to the Teen Spirit section). She has a radio show in LA and did a "Teen Spirit" cover tunes show back in June 2005. Although Barry on KGNU apparently came up with a bunch of covers that April didn't have.
And there are plenty of others who appreciate sick music. The god of what he calls "Incorrect Music" is Irwin Chusid, who has a show on WFMU in Jersey City, NY. Then there's Otis Fodder, and the American Song-Poem Archive . . . I could go on for a long time, but I won't (I've got to go t a work meeting in five minutes).

Dunno, Mirage. I went to check the playlist from the show to see who it was, but the KGNU website doesn't seem to be working properly. I'm gonna e-mail 'em and find out what's up. |

I actually enjoyed what I heard of it, which wasn't much.
Lass if you find out the playlist, let me know (or post it on here)...I'd like to rock out some of that stuff on my iPod. Yeah, weird, I know. |

Mirage, April Winchell's site (the one I linked to in my earlier message -- Martha's message repeats the link) features some of the versions. The first one on her page is described as "Text-to-speech synth version by strange Russian band." Maybe that's the one you're looking for?
And milo, FYI, April features Paul Anka's version on her page too (although it sounds from your message like you may already have it). |

"Text-to-speech synth version by strange Russian band." = Love! Thanks, sweetie, for introducing me to strange new worlds.
Edit: DUDE! The Teendokaka one is what I was talking about before-- "nana naanaaa". Sweet.
2nd Edit: The rest of the links on her page are great too--I might just sneak Dominic the Italian Christmas Donkey onto the BF's iPod. |
