In looking at the transcript of the chat with Clara I noticed a few people asking what she is trying to prove or disprove with her thesis. I think there's some confusion here, arising from two meanings of "thesis".
In the sentence "The thesis of this report is 'trains were a revolutionary technology of the 19th century'", a thesis is something to be proved or disproved. Often, however, 'thesis' is used to refer to a 'thesis project', which is simply a capstone to an academic program. In the arts, it often is essentially a portfolio of work dealing with a particular theme or issue. Performers will refer to their "thesis recital". _________________ scientia ex silico |
