It sounds almost like a direct warning from Gemma about the ceremony. Looks like Bree might have a little trouble getting out of it.

Wait, I thought Bree's mom didn't agree with thwarting the right of an individual. Maybe she's a hypocrite (or maybe she just changed her mind?). And why would it different for Gemma to be independent than for Bree?

I thought that was odd too. I still think her main message was "It's not your decision", maybe she meant "It is your decision (but something bad might happen if you change your mind)"?.... Laughing

Oh maybe even though she decides what to do, she won't have the final say. Confused

And here we have more of the Free Will vs. Determinism dialogue referenced in earlier films; Rosencrantz & Guildenstern, David Hume....

I'm starting to think that the only "Free Will" Bree's parents believe in..... is their own.

edit: Actually I always thought that Laughing

Although I think it was just bad ad-libbing that the Gemma *actress* used the particular words "it's your decision" at the end, I'd really like to know exactly what the Gemma *character* meant by the "it" Bree must decide about--to refuse to do the ceremony, knowing the refusal will be ignored? to tell her parents "everything" except about Daniel's B&E? to what?

But I've just got to say this again:

GEMMA'S CANON!

WOO-HOO!

*dance of joy*

And you guys are so right that this complicates the free will vs. determinism issue. When Gemma says, "Although I wasn't chosen to do the ceremony the way you were, I find it hard to live independently," (quote not exact), she implies that the Chosen One doesn't get independence, which is exactly contrary to free will. For that matter, being chosen is exactly the opposite of choosing for oneself.

Murkier and murkier.

Oh, I thought I would mention how sad Gemma's story about "Sam" was! She looked so happy talking about him, then so sad when she says she was told never to see him again... Crying or Very sad
Seems to be the theme with their religion, keep the boys away.

I wonder what would happen if they make her go through with it. 'Cause it doesn't seem to me that she will be allowed decide for herself.

And what's with the "no boys allowed"? I assume Gemma's parents were grooming her for the ceremony, as well...so, does this mean girls of this community aren't allowed to be involved with boys until after they've passed the age of being selected? (Again--I thought this ceremony was supposed to be infrequent, so how would doing that make sense?)

And Bree is now back home. Perhaps Daniel was packing to go back to his house as well?

And Bree was saying she was going to tell her parents. Since she's apparently going to do it in person rather than from the safety of an "Unknown" cell phone number several states away, I doubt she'll get away from them. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, indeed. They'll gnattering away about not doing the ceremony etc, etc, blah blah blah....but these kids fail to see the potential seriousness of their situation, and get suitably serious about surviving.
