LOL! Yes, Bacchus come in many different forms, but the one I posted is the more ancient version.
I have to add, after finally getting to read through the posts, that Bacchus is often argued to be the same person as Moses, and that one of Bacchus' symbols is the bull. Ahem, a male cow.
Just sayin'. |

A Toby Jug was used in the film Twelve O'Clock High.
The jug was used in the movie, and normally sat on the mantle in the Officer's Club facing the wall. The "Turning of the Toby" to face the room was a way to alert crew members in the Club of an upcoming mission.
The "Turning of the Toby" is actually based on fact. In World War One, similar codes were utilized by the RAF to signify that a mission was upcoming.
Many of the heavy bomber groups of the 8th Air Force used the "Turning of the Toby" to signify that it was time to stop drinking and get ready for a mission the next morning.
that seems to fit.

Delving a little deeper into Bacchus, just for S and G's, Bacchus did have a cult and they had what was called a "Bacchanalia" which were wild festivals attended originally just by women. Men were finally admitted and the cult spread far and wide and were always done at night. The cult started participating in crimes and infiltrating politics. Bacchanalia was finally outlawed except in special, approven cases (not sure what those were). |

This is a closer shot of the bookcase with the sculpture. I believe that the books look like blue and black binders with labels. Also, it almost looks to me as if the statue has horns.

Interesting since it fits with the incessant movie references too. I think we may be reading too much into this, but I found this poem which is supposedly where Toby Mugs are thought to have gotten their names from:
( fits with the Jonas drunk thing)
Toby Filpot or The Brown Jug
Dear Tom, this brown jug that now foams with mild ale
In which I will drink to sweet Nan of the Vale
Was once Toby Filpot, a thirsty old soul, As e're drank a bottle or fathom'd a bowl
In boozing about 'twas his praise to excel
And among jolly to -pers he bore off the bell... he bore off the bell
It chanc'd as in dog days he sat at his ease
In his flowe'r-woven arbour as gay as you please
With a friend and a pipe puffing sorrow away
And with honest stingo was soaking his clay
His breath-doors to friendship to mirth and mild ale
So here's to my loveley Nan of Vale
His body, when long in the ground it had lain
And time into clay had resolved it again, A potter found out in its covert so smug
And with part of fat Toby he form'd this brown jug
Now sacred to friendship, to mirth and mild ale
So here's to my loveley Nan of Vale _________________ Everything in the World Began with a YES! |

I think the same thing, though there are definitely some Toby Mugs that ae whit, or decorated minimally.... I was hoping it would be one maker, but so far it looks like several.
Since it seems like there are a few of us looking at the mugs, maybe we should share what we have looked at?
So far it's not Neptune or Bacchus..... I can't find a picture of a Lenin mug. _________________ Everything in the World Began with a YES! |

Is there a female equivalent for "cockblocking"?

well polygyny (the correct anthropological term for multiple wives) IS legal in Utah where many Mormons live and thus are allowed to practice polygyny legally. |
Apologies if someone's already corrected this statement (I've only made it to page 6 of this thread), but you're completely wrong. Polygyny is not legal in Utah, or anywhere else in the U.S. In fact, in 2001, the state of Utah successfully prosecuted a guy for four counts of bigamy -- which, of course, they wouldn't and couldn't have done if polygyny was legal there.

Cinderella (whoever that is) may perform the song, but the lyrics are by Joni Mitchell, from "Big Yellow Taxi":
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
It's an old song -- like from 1966 or something like that.

Me too, Kas. I don't see anything at all that looks to me like a cow.
