So, I'm in the process of looking up music for next years recital. Yeah, I know, it seems way early since I haven't had the end of year performance for this year yet, but we try to get as much done as we can before the summer break.

Anywho, the theme for next years recital is "Remixed and Remade".

So, toss me your favorite remixes and cover songs people...

I own a dance studio offering classes in Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical, Modern, Pointe and Hip-Hop. I'm looking for all types of music.

Here's an example of a song we are using next year...

The "Strange Little Girls" album (in case you don't know) by Tori is all covers. Fiona Apple does a cover of "Across the Universe" that I actually like better than the original. Le Tigre does "I'm So Excited". OOOOH Cake does "I Will Srivive"!! OOOHH...Paul Anka "Smells Like Teen Spirit"..and Alien Ant Farm "Smooth Criminal"..and Amy Winehouse "Moody's Mood For Love"..and Big Sir has a really pretty version of "Sarah Smile"(which is on an entire album of Carpenters covers...I think Jem is on it) Cyndi Lauper (speaking of her) has entire "covers" album "At Last"....um I'll shut up now

edit- on the Baz Luhrmann "Something For Everybody" and on the "Romeo and Juliet" soundtrack..there are some good/ interesting remixes...there's a cyndi song...and a prince song...and I think some more.

Rush covered "The Seeker", originally by The Who. It's kind of amazing.

Il Divo, a.k.a. Simon Cowell's Manbitches, did an interesting cover of "Without You", the Badfinger tune that Harry Nilsson made (in)famous. For pure melodrama and camp, Il Divo's version is superior to the Mariah Carey rendition, and it was used recently in a ballroom dancing competition...

Bananarama's "Venus" is a cover of a great old song by Shocking Blue. Nirvana covered another Shocking Blue song, "Love Buzz", as well as some cool songs by The Vaselines ("Son of a Gun", "Molly's Lips", "Jesus Don't Want Me for a Sunbeam").

"Tainted Love", an old Gloria Jones track, was covered by Soft Cell, Coil, and Marilyn Manson.

Speaking of Jones, Power Station had a hit in the Eighties with their cover of "Bang A Gong (Get It On)", a song originally recorded by T. Rex, Marc Bolan's band. (Jones had a child by Bolan, if I'm not mistaken.)

The Sisters of Mercy's rendition of "Gimme Shelter" amazes me to no end.

I'm not sure the Dead Kennedys' version of "I Fought the Law" would be appropriate for a dance recital, but I suppose it depends on the audience...

I might as well note that I once saw a drag queen do a stunning lip-synch and dance number to Liza Minnelli's version of "Twist in My Sobriety", the amazingly cool Tanita Tikaram song.
