Emo is an overused adjective at this point.

Emo originally was a style of music - called emo-core originally, I believe. It originated in Washington DC and was kind of a punk style of music at the time (FUGAZI!). In addition to having a unique sound, the bands and the band's fan base usually had a "look". That look has been coined the emo look and has involved into odd-angled myspace photos and god knows what else.

So there's the stereotypical "emo" person, which isn't exactly what emo is, but what people say it is. The stereotypical emo person is very, very thin. She/he wears tight girl jeans. He/she does not smile. He/she talks about death and pain a lot. He/she wears a lot of eyeliner. He/she wears old tee shirts or worn looking vintagey type shoes. She/he has black hair, or red hair. If they dont' have naturally black or red hair it is dyed which provides quite a contrast with light or freckled skin sometimes.

I don't know exactly why Sara is emo.

I know this doesn't really belong here, but is there anyone else who remembers emo music when emo wasn't a bad word? Bands like Rites of Spring and Fugazi, Thoughts of Ionesco, Torches to Rome, Current, Indian Summer, etc.? Or even the next phase of emo bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Mineral, Boys Life, etc.?

*sighs* The good ol' days...

I read a story somewhere that Fugazi was playing a show, and some kid in the crowd yelled up to Guy Picciotto "Dude, you're emo!" and he yelled back "Emo? What's that? You mean Emo Phillips?" It may have been the first ever reference to emo!

Indian Summer is one of the best, in my opinion, but two of my all-time favorites (almost exclusively on vinyl) are I Hate Myself and Yaphet Kotto!

Yep. I remember when Jimmy Eat World actually was emo. before their big hit albums.

It's funny we all mentioned Fugazi, I think they are the quintessential "old school" emo band.

I have vinyls (and I'm a kid:P)
My mom has this old music store who has been closed since the 80's, those vinyls I find there have mad good sound
