Hehe no one can agree on the definition for emo. The best way I know how to describe it is somewhere between goth and punk.

Check out these that try to define it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo_%28slang%29
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=emo

For a TV example think Peter Petrelli from Heroes... rofl it's true.

Alright no one gets what emo is, and it's probably ten times harder to get from reading about it.

Umm I got bored lol. So I decided to find some pictures of emo fashion from bands. There's probably better examples of kids on myspace Laughing. But the famous people are the ones who will likely influence the fashion.

Here's some photos of emo fashion from bands:

My Chemical Romance:

Fall Out Boy:

Hawthorne Heights:

Good Charlotte (they're probably more punkish):

Green Day (they're not really emo, but their style is similar):

Paramore:

Avril Lavigne (she went through a sort of emoish phase):

The Veronicas (they sometimes dress emo):

Yea now I'm still bored...

Also I'm from NZ and I think emos dress more black here. I mean totally geared in black clothes. Emo's a new clique... so if I say 'no one gets it' does that sound to emo..? Confused

Ahhahahhaha! watching_watchers your avatar honestly has to be the most emo one around here! I mean the angle, the make up, the fringe, your black top, and is that a doll? You look nice, although I'm afraid that's emo Smile

Hehe don't kill yourself over realizing your truly emo... Shocked

Oh god, these forums are so going to be spammed because of all this emo crap. That single video title might have started a lot of controversy...... ummm

You know, its funny how as we grow older and finding out new stereotypes. "Emo???" Every time I hear that word for some reason I think "Elmo" I don't know why lol. Anyways, I never really compared to Emo and Goth, their simular but not the same.

Most people when they think of emo - the style - think of things more like this:

or

more akin to the band Weezer:

Yea that's interesting... is emo closer to that in the states??

I have a sense that it's more black and dark style in New Zealand where I'm from, or maybe it's just me.

I think the bottom line with emo is that no one can agree on what it is Laughing

That's the more traditional "emo" style of fashion, at least when it started. It may have changed, but I think there's a greater general difference between emo and goth here than there. But then again, the idea of "emo" is probably changing regularly, so who knows?

lol I just thought of that but you posted it first Razz. The older emo look is closer Weezer and bright colored shirts etc. The first wave of emo or something, lmao. The new 'emo kids' today are dressed in a lot of black closer to My Chemical Romance and some other photos I posted before. That's what I just thought of right now anyway.

The way to spot an emo when you're walking around the streets is their fringe, which is brushed across to one side of their face and usually in the way of their eyes.

I think we have to wait a few more years to see if emo is just a phase, or if it's a new teenage subculture.

lol random fun emo discussion Laughing

I concur with BK. That's my concept of emo too. There is, atm, "scene" which is a melding of 70's glam style and stage spectacles ala Queen and Bowie, with emo and goth.

The set of pics earlier have emo/scene bands but not really the style. The stage clothes of Panic and MCR are over the top and the FOB pic is at an award show. The style is much more tee-shirts with slogany stuff (the more ironic, generally the better) hoodies and tight, oft-ripped jeans. Rivers's glasses are still, esentially, standard issue.

More than anything, I think we're waiting for it to be defined. It seems to be lumped in with goth a lot.

Hmmm.... what is 'scene'??? And what's the difference between 'scene' and emo? I never got that one...

OK OK this is my understanding of what I see happening. I think emo is slightly darker in nature.

Yea I think emo is closer to goth than scene is? Maybe??

Emo and scene kind of have connections together don't they?. But emo seems to be including elements of goth, while scene seems to be staying away from the darker macabre influence.

Is that right? Or do I not know what I'm talking about lol. I'm not sure..??? Meh I'm lost myself Wink
