(Charlie and Lauren open a gate, followed by Lee)
Lee: This is it?
Lauren: Do you reckon they've got a loo here?
Charlie: This is where he said it was.
Lauren: How could he get here without wheels though?
Lee: I don't know, it's miles out.
Lauren: He's not exactly all there is he.
(Charlie looks through the window of the house and knocks on the door twice.)
Lauren: Just go in.
(Charlie opens the door and enters)
Charlie: Gav?
Lee: Gavin?
Lauren: Gavin?
Lee: Gavin?
Charlie: Gav?
(There is a thump from upstairs)
Charlie: Gav?
(Charlie takes the camera and goes upstairs. She pushes open a door to reveal a laptop and a picture of Kate on a desk.)
Charlie: Oh my God.
(Charlie looks to the right to find Gavin sitting on a bed)
Charlie: Gav? Gavin? Are you okay?
Gavin: Yes! I'm fine. You found it then. You realize what this place is?
Charlie: Yeah, I think I can guess.
Gavin: It's all in here.
(Gavin hits the folder he is holding)
Gavin: Genevieve. AKA Kate. Well, all about the disturbed sleep patterns and severe nightmares and delusional fantasies. It goes way back before '96. They put her away there. A mental institution. She was just a teenager.
Charlie: Gavin, they're just medical notes.
Gavin: Well, and her home address! Ta da! There's got to be more to it than this.
(Gavin begins frantically looking through the folder)
Charlie: Gav, Kate was a girl with nightmares, you know, who had problems. Don't you get it? That's it!
Gavin: But -
Charlie: But what? You've been through that? A couple of times? And? You've just got to forget about it.
Gavin: There's got to be more to it than this.
(Hazel steps into the room, followed by Lee)
Charlie: Uh... Hello.
Lee: Kate's mum. Um, oh, we're really sorry, uh, we let ourselves in.
Hazel: Charlie. Gavin.
(Gavin, shocked, nods)
(Cut to Lauren boredly sitting on a sofa.)
Lauren: You're serious. That's well messed up.
Lee: What she said. She looks so helpless.
Lauren: No excuse.
Gavin: Shut up and let her finish or go and wait in the car! Right? Sorry.
Charlie: So, Kate... sorry, Genevieve, was a Trait Positive girl in the laboratory.
Hazel: Yeah. I didn't really know what Trait Positive meant, I mean, I understood the fundamentals of haematology but I didn't know that Trait Positive meant anything else.
Lauren: You want locking up.
Gavin: So you just took the baby even though you were a doctor there.
Hazel: I was really lucky to get a job in private institution in the first place, I mean, I trained for years, I was really good. I went into medicine to preserve life, whatever the cost. But, well, nothing can prepare you for what the job really is, and that divorcing yourself from your patients and... Well, I grew fond of Gen. I don't know why above the others, but... I started a fire. Security was tight but nothing like now and...
Charlie: So you what? You smuggled her out?
Hazel: I don't know how it got to that. But I knew what was planned. The experiments they were going to do on her, those procedures they had scheduled, even I knew it was wrong. That's how awful that place was. They didn't even file it, they just put it on the wasteage, another dead baby, that was it! Mm. That's funny. But the atrocities that were carried out in the name of science; I squared them with myself because I knew my baby was safe at home. Well it was a struggle. Gen and no job, but I think I must have wanted a way out in the first place. It felt good, giving her a normal, sort of normal I don't know, I don't know if it was me, how I brought her up or all the procedures that were done on that tiny little body but she was so affected on a subconscious level and I, I just, I failed her. As a doctor, as a baby, and then later on as she grew up to be a young woman, I failed her as a mother. And I, I had to let her go, just let her go.
(Hazel stands and leaves the room)
(Fade in to Hazel sitting on an armchair)
Hazel: Genevieve - Kate - wanted to escape the isolation here. I wanted her to gain confidence, independance, and then of course she reached the age where she didn't want, need, looking after. And she resented me. I couldn't blame her. I was part of the upbringing she was trying to escape. If only she'd known what would have happened to her if I'd left her there. She ran away to London and I let her go, much as it killed me to do so. I knew what I've done her it would only be a matter of months before the Order tracked her down. Got their claws into her.
(Charlie kneels to Hazel by her armchair)
Charlie: I knew London Kate. Genevieve. She was my best friend. If you ever want to talk or anything, there. Let's go.
(The group stands and leaves the room.)
