Emma's first adoptive parents, like her current adoptive parents were members of the Hymn of One. They told Emma that it was a great honor for them to adopt her, presumably because she was trait positive, although that has never been specified.

They raised Emma until the time she was nine. Her mother had dropped her off at a dress rehearsal for a singing recital at the Hymn of One campus. She went home to get dressed and pick up her father, but neither of them ever made it back to the play. Both were killed in a car accident. Emma says that during the play she looked for them in the audience, but they weren't there. Emma was then sent to Jonas's family, with whom she has lived for the past six years.
