Description It was a good idea to get together to remember Kate. In practice I’m not sure how well it worked…

Transcript

(Charlie is standing in a room, dressed in black. Julia approaches her with the camera for a hug.)

Charlie: Hey.

(Charlie hugs Julia. Julia then pans around the room, looking at all of the guests. She walks to the front of the room, approaching a picture of Kate. Julia puts the camera down nearby and walks over to the table to place a bunch of flowers on it. Cut to Charlie hugging Emine Pirhasan and Ben Moorhouse. Cut to Charlie being comforted by a guest. Gavin enters with his flower for Kate, and gives Charlie a kiss on the cheek. He hugs her as he looks over at Julia. Gavin leaves and walks over to Julia.)

Gavin: What'd you bring that for?

Julia: It's for some friends of Kate's online who couldn't be here today. Charlie said it was fine.

(Gavin sighs and walks over to throw his Gerbera angrily on the table. He then sits down and glares at Julia. Charlie walks to the front of the room.)

Charlie: (Sighs.) Hello, everyone, it's so nice to see so many of you. (Cut to a shot of a guest.) Kate meant... so much to me. (Cut back to Charlie.) She was a really good friend, and I feel really privileged to have known her during her short life. Um, I wanted to record today so that we could put it online and so that we could share everything-

(Charlie is interrupted by loud footsteps. Everyone turns around, to find Steve entering with a plastic bag. Steve looks embarrassed and quickly takes a seat next to Julia.)

Charlie: Maybe... some of you would like to come up and share some words about Kate?

Tom: Charlie, I would. (Raises his hand.)

Charlie: Thanks, Tom.

(Tom walks to the front of the room as Charlie sits down next to Gavin.)

Tom: I'm sure I can speak on behalf of everyone when I say Kate meant a lot to a lot of people. (Gavin puts his arm around Charlie.) Uh, I was lucky enough to meet her when she was showing her artwork at the gallery. I just want to say on behalf of everyone that... Kate, we'll really miss you.

(Cut to Emine Pirhasan and Ben Moorhouse's performance. Cut to a shot of another guest, then to a shot of Kate's picture. Cut to Gavin at the front of the room.)

Gavin: Sometimes, uh, in life, we... meet somebody that we-we have a, uh, a connection with. Somebody that we... relate to. Um, somebody that can be a, uh, a guiding light i-in a person's life. Um... Kate wasn't that for me, in truth. Um, we didn't get on as well as... as we could have done. I mean, in many ways, um, I, uh... she- I mean, she'll be missed; she will be missed. (Waves at the picture of Kate.) Bye, Kate.

(As he goes to sit down, Gavin quietly asks if anyone else would like to say anything. Charlie goes back to the front of the room.)

Charlie: Thanks for that, everyone. Um... Would anyone else like to come up and say a few words about Kate?

Steve: I'd like to say something.

(Charlie looks irritated as the camera swings around to show Steve with his hand raised. Steve gets up, grabs his bag, and walks to the front of the room.)

Steve: Kate... meant the world to me. You could say we- we meant under extraordinary circumstances. From then our relationship wasn't exactly normal. But I believe that Kate was a truly special person. For she helped to awaken feelings in me I hadn't felt for a very long time; things I didn't think existed anymore. Just before she-... Well, not long ago, (Takes the book "Finding the One" out of his bag.) I gave her this book. So I know she didn't get a chance to read it, therefore I'd like to share some of the words with you all now; and with her, if she's listening.

(Steve opens the book and gets ready to begin reading, but then stops as he notices someone entering. The camera pans to the back of the room to reveal Tariq, heading toward Steve.)

Tariq: How dare you?

Steve: What?

Tariq: You have got nerve turning up here after what you did to her.

Steve: I don't know what you're talking about.

Tariq: You are a murderer. (Knocks the book out of Steve's hands.) You have got no right to show your face here today. (Gavin gets up and comes over.)

Steve: You need to get your facts straight. Calling me a murderer? (Shoves Tariq.) And you can't control your temper!

Gavin: (Stopping Tariq from attacking Steve.) I think it's time for you to go, mate.

Steve: Me go?

Gavin: Yeah!

Steve: why? I'm not the one with anything to hide, and the police know it! I've been honest with everyone from the very beginning. I'm not the one who's hiding out like he has something to hide.

Tariq: Are you talking to me, Steve?

Steve: Yes. I am talking to you, Tariq. Where've you been? Hiding away? Running off? Maybe you're the one who should be in a police cell.

Tariq: You bastard!

(Tariq attacks Steve. Julia and Gavin run to pull Tariq away.)

Julia: Tariq! Stop it!

Tariq: You liar!

Julia: Not here!

Steve: Please!

Gavin: Hey!

Steve: Leave it be!

Gavin: Just-

Steve: Fine. Alright

Gavin: Just- (Charlie picks up the picture of Kate, which smashed to the floor in the fight.) Give it a rest.

Steve: I'm fine. Thank you. Just calm-

Gavin: Tariq, just give it-

Charlie: What have you done? (Sniffs.)

(Charlie puts the picture of Kate on the table and runs out of the room.)

Gavin: Nice work, lads. Really nice work. (Runs after Charlie.)

(Steve walks to pick up the book.)

Tariq: You won't get away with this, Steve.

Steve: I didn't do it, Tariq. Believe me, I'm gonna find out who did. (Walks out.)

Julia: Why are you so short-tempered?

Tariq: I just am!

Julia: What does that mean?

Tariq: The way he used to look at her...

Julia: The way he used to look at her?

Tariq: I-It wasn't normal!

Julia: The police let him go. What is going through your brain, Tariq? You've got to have more than a hunch to go around accusing people of murder.

Tariq: He knows more than he's letting on. Don't worry, I'm gonna get to the bottom of it.

(Tariq walks out. Julia pans the camera to find Tom picking up pieces of glass from the floor.)

Julia: Are you okay?

Tom: I'm alright. Could you give me a hand with this?

Julia: Yeah.
