Description On Wednesday, January 10, we will begin with the first assignment of the term. Consider for a moment whether or not people give freely, while expecting nothing in return. As human beings, we are amazing creatures. Study up, students. (Choral Adagio Solitary Lament by GracieOC)

Lesson One

(Two Greek masks revolve, one happy, one sad)

What is the purpose of tragedy?

Do catastrophes help us grow?

Does pain offer us more than just the ability to feel?

Is drama most compelling when it happens to others,

(A man and a woman, yell at each other, gesturing with their hands)

and we sit confortably watching, uninvolved?

Is human compassion stronger than self-preservation, self-serving behavior or some inate survival instinct?

Consider kindness.

Do people really ever give without expecting to receive?

Why can't joy be our only emotion, generousity be our only instinct and empathy be our pulse?

Or are they?

(A woman and a small child stand on a beach. The child runs to the woman, who catches the child and lifts her up to hug her.)

Humanity evolves, develops, emerges.

We are geniuses.

(A bomb explouds, sending up a cloud of dust)

with the ability to treat illness, conclude peace and direct technology.

We are so powerful,

and yet, so powerless.

Students, together let us explore compassion in our world of winning greed, voyeuristic indifference, unthinkable pain,

which is how it can seem sometimes.

On Wednesday (1/10), I will present your first assignment. Professor Boone will guide you to the password, so you can bring it.

All will become clear then.
