(Throughout, we see close-ups of Bree in different locations in Jonas's house.)

Bree: What Jonas said the other day, about needing a distraction? I think he was right. I know that's why he tried to teach me how to skateboard, but... that didn't really work out.

The problem is, Jonas lives in the middle of nowhere, so for the first time, I'm free of all rules and restrictions, and to be honest, there's absolutely nothing to do. Thankfully, I discovered that Jonas owns a lot of DVDs. Maybe it's a side effect of bring home-schooled, but it's hard for me to watch a movie or a TV show without stopping and thinking that maybe I should be learning something. I think that's why my parents always tried to limit what I watched, because I have what some people might call an "active imagination."

When I was little, my dad used to encourage me to read by buying me Nancy Drew novels, so ever since then, I've been obsessed with any movie, TV show, or book that involves detectives, spies, and secret codes, anything where it all sort of... fits together at the end. I wasn't always allowed to watch those kind of shows, except for one exception. My dad's research kept him really busy, but he always made sure to devote one afternoon a week to spend time with me. So on those afternoons, if there was a spy movie that he wanted to see, he knew that he wouldn't get any complaints out of me. (little laugh) But I think that my mother wasn't always happy when she'd find out.

Missing that time with my dad made me put together a little detective, spy, secret code, and mystery movie marathon out of Jonas's DVDs! I watched Citizen Kane, Usual Suspects, Sneakers, Out of Sight, Ocean's Eleven, and Never Say Never Again. It was fantastic! So, after watching all of these, I became obsessed with an elaborate theory that I concocted about the other day when I dialed a wrong number, as if somebody was trying to get in touch with me using code. And, after dialing and redialing and trying to figure it out, I realized that it wasn't gonna lead me anywhere. And now that I think about it, it's actually a little bit embarrassing. Owen offered to take credit for it, but I wouldn't let him. (little laugh)

Anyhow, I thought that I was really smart and that I was really on to something, but I guess that sometimes a coincidence is just that.

Notes

  • Although Bree talks as if she had not figured out her father's message, she is actually speaking in code and telling him that she indeed received it. The first letters of the titles of the movies spell "CUSOON", as in "See you soon." Since her father's message said to meet him a week after receiving it, Bree was expected to meet with him Saturday, December 30th, 2006. This also means that her dad is aware of her video blogs since she responded to him through this video.
  • In Nikki Bower's blog Happy Holidays LG15 - NBR 8 (which was posted the same day as this video), she signs her post off with the letters CUSOON - as in Bree's puzzle. The YouTube description of this video is "I shot this video last night & edited it today before Bree's latest video. I had to make a slight edit...see if you can guess what it was. Happy Holidays!" This was a significant clue in the mystery of Nikki B's canonicity.
