Introduction
In Gemma's video Bad Decisions a wilting rose is prominently displayed on her right hand side. This rose is a subject of debate in the boards and fans have proposed many possible explanations, ranging from superficial to literary, from plausible to highly speculative. The meaning of the rose will likely never be directly explained, but as the story progresses perhaps fans will better nail down the reason why the creators added it in this video.
Suggested explanations
- Gemma's date -- The rose was given to Gemma by this boy on the first or second dates. The relationship went awry and the rose died.
- Distrust
- The wilted rose not only represents Gemma's lost trust in this boy, but also her lack of trust in Jonas. So important is her distrust of him that the rose is placed there to emphasize it. This ties in with the Bad Decisions theme of "people are not always who they seem".
- It represents Bree's trust in Gemma. Perhaps at first she thought Gemma could be trusted, but something happened to alert her that she should not follow Gemma's advice. This would explain why Bree no longer acknowledges Gemma's videos, yet frequently refers to Jonas and wants to trust him. This would also tie in with the theme of "people are not always who they seem".
- The rose symbolizes the Order, and its wilting represents corruption
- At the center of the unicursal hexagram lies a rose. This symbol has been linked to Bree's religion and the Order.
- The rose's wilting could then represent that Gemma has been corrupted by the Order.
