Template:Blog3 What Makes Us Sad? is the sixty-fourth video in the Lonelygirl15 video series. Bree gives us some factoids on sadness.

Transcript

(The video opens with a montage of Bree at her desk making a series of sad faces.)

Bree: What makes us sad? Why can't we feel happy when sad things are happening around us? It just seems so silly for us to suffer so much. Even animals get sad, they just show it in different ways than we do. When a dog gets sad, he puts his tail in between his legs. (Bree makes a "sad dog" noise") Elephants are very intelligent. Actually, they're a lot like humans. Some people say that when elephants get sad, they cry. Now that is sad. When Owen gets sad, he hides in his shell.

(cut to Owen)

Bree: (as Owen) It's so dark in here!

(cut to Bree)

Bree: When Thor gets sad, he gets kind of mean. It's really bizarre.

(cut to Thor)

Bree: (as Thor) Grrrrr...

(cut to Bree)

Bree: But Purple Monkey? He never gets sad.

(musical montage of Purple Monkey dancing)

Bree: You know what's really weird? If you frown, even if you feel happy, you'll start to feel sad. (Bree frowns) You should try it! Well, you shouldn't try it but you should... That doesn't make sense. Neuroscientists have found that low levels of serotonin and dopamine are linked to sadness.

(fast forward segment in which Bree says ????)

Bree: (sighs) Anyway, apparently it all comes down to the itty-bitty chemicals in between the nerves in your brain. I dunno about that. I think that...the reason we get sad or that, the reason that it's so painful...is so that we'll change things to make us feel happy again. So...what am I talking about? Well, my parents talked to the deacons, and...I don't think it went very well. They looked all sad and they didn't tell me what happened. (Bree sighs) Anyway, I'm gonna go and try again, maybe later. I hope everything will be okay...I think. Bye.
