Hey I just wandered into this forum and saw this topic! Sorry to butt in, I thought I would share my experiences!
I used to get sleep paralysis and hypnopompic (waking up) and hypnagogic (falling asleep) hallucinations alot when I was 16-20, I hardly ever get them now (i'm nearly 22, I guess i grew out of them or learnt how to deal or something) but for a while they made sleeping hell!
I used to have lucid dreams a lot, dream where you know you're dreaming. As soon as I became aware that I was dreaming my body would half wake up. I would open my eyes and see my room. Then the hypnopompic hallucinations would start...sometimes there would be a "shadow man" kneeling on my chest so I couldn't breathe, once I saw aliens stood around my bed (luckily I was aware of what sleep paralysis and hypnopompic hallucinations were, so when I woke up I didn't think I had been abducted!) and felt myself being dragged to the end of my bed, once I thought someone was throwing me around the room, sometimes I would hear a voice hissing things in my ear...all horrible stuff.
As for hypnagogic hallucinations, if I'm really really tired, or have been drinking the night before so haven't had a good night's sleep for a couple of days, I get sleep paralysis whilst falling asleep. I suppose it's a more complex version of that "dreaming you're falling and waking up suddenly" thing, except I dream I'm falling then wake up and can't move! I've managed to minimise this sort of paralysis and hallucination by cutting down on my drinking and sleeping on my side. If I ever fall asleep on my back I can guarantee I will get some form of sleep disturbance!
My sister and Mum and Dad suffer from them too, my sister is 24 and still sometimes she gets the hypnagogic hallucination, and will wake up crying and screaming for my Mum. It's pretty horrible!
I suffered from them and disturbed sleep for ages, but these days I'm able to wake myself up fully from a lucid dream, as soon as I think I might be getting sleep paralysis I can force my body to move (so difficult sometimes, takes so much concentration!) or make a little noise, or just do anything to tell my body to wake up! Since I practiced and learnt these techniques I can get out of the sleep paralysis state pretty quickly.

Sorry I've been gone for a bit, my modem died on me yesterday, before I could post anything, and it doesn't look like I'll be able to really get back until Monday or Tuesday.
