The one thing that I am unsure about is that if bree was being injected with epogen then would it really explain her being run down and looking the way that she was when she was on it? If this drug works in the same way as epo then it should increase her red blood cells which shouldn't really have these sorts of side effects.

unless she either was being subjected to something that was creating a decrease in red blood cells and the epogen was just barely keeping pace with that.

I think there are some adverse reactions to taking epogen. It can cause seizures for instance, which is probably why there was anti-seizure medication in the house. The warning label says to contact a doctor if you become pale, and Bree did look pale.

Another interesting thing about Epogen (or Epo, as it's often called) is that it's incredibly expensive - if all of those boxes contain Epo then there's a huge amount of money there. A year's supply for a dialysis patient costs somewhere around $10,000 - so expensive that a lot of insurers won't cover it except in extreme circumstances. I write software for the Renal industry and doctors are always very interested in features that let them track the dosage and effects of Epo so that they can use it more efficiently.
