Quote: | The orange Western carrot emerged in the Netherlands in the 15th or 16th century, its orange color making it popular in those countries as an emblem of the House of Orange and the struggle for Dutch independence.
It was during the 80 Years War, and became a symbol AGAINST tyranny and Spanish repression. It was a symbol of independence!
And as for the different colors of carrots, I personally have eaten white carrots, and can purchase purple ones at a local vegetable market.
The main reason we do not see different colored carrots in North America is because of the different climate and soil conditions needed to grow them. To suggest that the diversity of carrots does not still exist today is an outright lie. |
Sphnix, you seem to be my only worthy foe now. At least you don't call me illiterate when you have nothing better to say. But the question was NOT if there were still different color carrots in existence, but if they are used in carrot cake. They are not. Until someone, anyone can show me a picture of a carrot cake that used a non-orange carrot, this fact will stand.
As for the 80 years war, they still created the orange carrot in tribute to a monarchy that only came into power after 80 years of violence against their lawful rulers. And to close, did you know that carrots are terrorists?

THE EXACT SAME VISION YOU HAD WHEN YOU STARTED OUT, ITS NOT AN IMPROVEMENT TO GO BACK TO THE BASE LEVEL! |
Again, check your history.
We're talking about World War II.
Vitamin A (as well as most vitamins) deficiencies were rampant in Britain due to the very shortages you originally quoted. Most commoners were suffering from Reduced Night Vision due to Vitamin A Deficiency!
So no, your soda analogy proves absolutely nothing.
My math is correct.
So is the fact that Carrot Cake Haters often suffer from poor analytical and mathematical skills. You have proven this point.

Your suggestion that this mother's absolute and genuine pride in the accomplishments of her child are anything but that...

And I had such high hopes for you, that we could conduct this debate with civility and honor. But the personal attacks come out again. So sad really. As far as it goes, I stand by my statement that allowing an ability to decline, then to bring it back up to normal is NOT AN IMPROVEMENT. It is bringing said ability back to nominal function. Add it up any way you'd like, its not going to change that fact.
And you can growl at me anytime you want I just hope your child learns from your mistakes and doesn't attack those he disagrees with personally. |

Chinese New Year Cakes include the red sweet rice cake and the white carrot cake.
Also, since this has made me want Carrot Cake in the worst way, I will be making Carrot Cake this weekend. IF another color carrot is available, I will make it from those carrots.
And I will be posting a picture.
And, as I eat said deliciously moist manna from heaven, I will think of you Lad, and feel pity. |

First Tilt and now Sphinx. What a sad day for me
First of all, I can see cakes in your pic, but not what is in them. And white carrot cake, it does not contain carrot at all. They call turnips or white radishes "white carrots" but they are not so. Here is the recipe for your white carrot cake
Makes one 9x2 inch round cake
1.5 kg (about 3 big ones) white carrots (turnips)
300g rice flour
25 Chinese dried mushrooms, soaked overnight in water
10 dried scallops, soaked overnight or 6 Chinese sausages, chopped
handful dried shrimps, soaked overnight (optional)
8g five spices powder
2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp chicken powder
1 Tbsp white pepper
2 slices of ginger
2 Tbsp oil
1 Tbsp oil
Its sounds like the most disgusting thing ever. It is I who pity you Sphinx. |

That can not be a recipe for any type of cake...it has chicken powder, 6 Chinese sausages and dried shrimps! Honestly, that doesn't make a cake, that makes some sort of..casserole? Weird loaf thing? Odd bread with meat in it? I don't know, but whatever it is, it isn't

Well well well. It appears that all of Lad's so-called "supporters" have abandoned him in his hour(s) of need. Just what I would expect, of course, but I can't help feeling a little sorry for Lad, who tries so hard and has still not yet reached enlightenment.
Lad, I have a suggestion that will cure all your worries and relieve all your fears. Go procure yourself some white and purple carrots. Use them to make your very own carrot cake, which you can examine and photograph at your leisure. And then, when you are done with the analysis, you can sample the cake and realize how sadly misguided you have been this entire time. At that time, we will of course welcome you with open arms into the halls of the wise. _________________ "A step in the right direction? I must admit, I am feeling a bit like Leonidas of Sparta, leading so few soldiers into battle against the legions of Xerxes I of Persia at the Battle of Thermopylae.
But we all know what just a few Spartans can do
And acid, poor poor acid, you are my Ephialtes. You will not escape the reward of your action traitor! |

And now it comes out that carrot cake may lead us all to a Children of Men type senario
Quote: | Trans fats linked to infertility in women
JOHN INNES
Trans fats, used to cook foods like French fries and found in biscuits, dramatically increase a woman's risk of becoming infertile, according to new research.
Scientists found that for every two per cent increase in the number of calories a woman got from trans fats instead of carbohydrates, her risk of infertility increased by 73 per cent. Scientists believe trans fats - found mostly in processed vegetable oils - interfere with cells that play a vital role in ovulation. |
and goes on to say...
Quote: | They are used in a wide variety of products including carrot cakes, biscuits and pastries. The team estimated that if a woman is eating 1,800 calories a day, two per cent of energy intake in trans fats would equal just four grammes. |
So eat at your own risk ladies, you are speeding us toward extinction
And before Tilt or Sphinx say anything, yes I am aware that RAW carrots are known to increase fertility. However, once you put them in an oven for 30 minutes to an hour, they are no longer raw, and lose a lot of their vitamin and mineral benefits. |
