pure conjecture is tricky; i only like theories that can have a basis in what we "know" from past events or from what the people have said (Tachy, Oppy, Brother...y...).

well, knowing what I know about cell phone GPS, if you track it back wards, from the person/place to the signal you can find out the cell phone number. But you ahve to have either cell phone company on your side, or very a lot of smarts about satelites.
You typically need the cell phone number to track the gps signal, but if you have the cell phone company on your side (which we know the police are comprimised, so there for it's easy access for the police), and you know the direct location (Daniels bedroom, the people who help OpAphid are probably smart enough to figure out teh Long and Lat.), then they can get the cell phone number through the signal.

And Oppy never specifically said what she's looking for. Many assume it's the ID because Daniel said he lost it.

That seems too simple.

Yes, I understand finding it would supposedly narrow down their location, but there's got to be more to it than that.

Besides, Jonas has given enough detail about his parents for their names to be found...and it seems far easier to do a property records search than a complicated cell phone triangulation.

Well, that's how I would do it, anyway.

Ok, guys.

Nobody took me seriously last night when I said in IRC that I'm 99% sure that the triangulation pic in the thread earlier is done wrong.

The point that would be identified by triangulation should be exactly the same distance from each of the three points of the triangle. Any triangle can have its three points put on a circle. The center of that circle (not the "center" of the triangle) is the location that is the same distance from each of those points. And I'm sorry, I know I'm not explaining this well.

I played with it for quite a while last night, making sample triangles, printing maps, and I cannot get it to land exactly on one of the bowling alleys. It may be because the area is large enough that the maps distort, or it may be that I simply don't have perfectly accurate points for the triangle when I'm guessing on a huge dot on a map.

What I do know is this: the bowling alley closest to correct, by far, from the way I figure it, is Lakeside Lanes in Lakeport. Frustratingly, though, I get slightly further south, toward the other end of the lake, though all the same town. And since she already gave us the names of the bowling alleys, she might consider just giving us the town by triangulation good enough.

Which is why I'm not 110% sure.

Going to post some pics momentarily that illustrate what I mean, and why I think we're pointed at Lakeside Lanes.

Lakeside Lanes is the one that is closed down. From what I understand the only two not looked at are Ukiah and Lakeside. Ukiah is supposedly in a more BFE setting. These two places, I would say, need looked at...assuming that nothing was missed at the others.

So, if there are only two sites left- are there enough drop-site folks to have two teams to handle this tonight in one swell foop?

Continental is closed, not Lakeside.

Also...there is no cell tower in Dillon Beach, guys. So, how Oppy is getting a triangulation from Dillon Beach is off-putting.

Cells generally don't come in out at Dillon Beach -- at least the Sprint and Verizon ones didn't last year when we were there. So I'd say that no, there's no towers nearby, most likely. (Or weren't. It could have changed now with the ubiquitous nature of cellular phones.)

I used to work for sprint/nextel. Just checked the coverage map and there is supposedly "clear voice and data" coverage for zip code 90023 (Dillon Beach)

Fairly even-sided triangle:
This is a fairly even-side triangle. As you can see, by bisecting the sides with perpendicular lines, the three red lines intersect. Where they intersect is the center of a circle, and that circle has all three points of the triangle on it. So the points are all an equal distance from the circle center.

Odd-shaped triangle:
Same thing, but with one side much shorter then the others. It moves that circle center away from the middle of the triangle.

Really odd triangle:
Sorry this is sideways, but you get the idea. It's a lot like our bowling alley hint. The thing is, with a lopsided triangle like this, sometimes the circle midpoint ends up OUTSIDE the triangle.

The map in Google Earth
Sorry this is so hard to see... the red lines intersect just outside the triangle. The bowling alley is approximately where the grey dot is to the northwest of the intersecting red lines.

Greyscale Google Earth
A greyscale map. Easier to see the red lines.

Greyscale Google Earth Closeup
Hopefully this makes it easier to see.

Lakeside lanes is about 8-10 miles from that point, Ukiah is 40-50 as the crow flies.

So. If we're really to figure triangulation, and not play with how loud sounds are, that's the triangulation.

Then again, playing with sounds might be right. Smile I'm open to being wrong. [/img]
