"My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."
__President Reagan on live radio, August 1984
Another little nugget.
He didn't realize the broadcast had started. He was making a joke, kidding around with the staff, and the joke was broadcast live.
As I kid, I found that kind of joke scary.
Even when the White House explained the Gipper was just joshin'. _________________ Tenser, said the Tensor.

Nice people can be scary, too.
From an academic site on Cold War history:
When asked during the Presidential debates if he believed in Armageddon, President Reagan said: "Yes, Armageddon could come the day after tomorrow." During his 1984 Presidential campaign, Reagan told Fundamentalist Christian groups that he believed in the Biblical prophecy of Armageddon and that this could be the generation that sees Armageddon.

Now that quote doesn't make him seem scary to me...I've heard that argument a lot so I'm fairly used to it, but the selling weaponry to Iran is scary as all get out! _________________ I too have discovered the location of our fearless Commander Cloud!

For what it's worth, I've met a number of politicians, some on the national level. Some Republicans, some Democrats. Most of them-- even the ones I didn't agree with on political grounds-- seemed like nice people.
I don't evaluate people on the basis of their being nice.
But then again, I'm a jerk, so you should probably ignore any or all of my statements. _________________ Tenser, said the Tensor.
