For what it's worth, I've met a number of politicians, some on the national level. Some Republicans, some Democrats. Most of them-- even the ones I didn't agree with on political grounds-- seemed like nice people.
I don't evaluate people on the basis of their being nice.
But then again, I'm a jerk, so you should probably ignore any or all of my statements. |

Nice people can be scary, too.
From an academic site on Cold War history:

What can I say? When I was a youngster, I found that more frightening than any movie starring a certain hockey-masked killer.
Death squads in El Salvador and other Latin American countries, probably not scary either. School of the Americas, doesn't inspire a shudder.
