For FUN I will do a factoring thingie.
1(+ 8 ) 3(- 8 ) 5(+ 16) 3(- 16) 6(+ 16) 2(- 16) 7(+ 24 )
divided by magic 8.
1 (+1) 3(-1) 5(+2) 3(-2) 6(+ 2) 2(- 2) 7(+ 3)
then we get:

I hear ya!!
So to take a step back, here are some things I've had on my mind:
1) The 8 stones -- the hell? "8" has been hinted at Walter as an important clue, but what about the stones themselves? What is he trying to tell us? (Aside from telling us that we have rocks for brains, that is)
2) The book -- while Walter had said that we wouldn't need to worry about the text itself, he emphasized that the "8"th edition was important. But recalling the previous puzzle, was there anything about the book (besides the edition #) that was important? Was the fact that it was a chemistry journal important? The fact that it was published in Tokyo?
3) IKYOIYK -- A Vignere key? If it is a key, where's the text? Walter said that we "should know what to do," but does that mean to approach this doing what we've done in previous puzzles? If so, then does using the elements (Iodine Potassium Yttrium Oxygen) fit with this?
4) The number sequence -- what's the point of doing so many shifts, and the alternating +/-'s? It looks like a shift sequence on steroids. Obviously the shifts being multiples of 8 is a clue, but now what? Is this a biology puzzle? Or a chemistry puzzle? A math puzzle? All 3?
I think Walter needs to throw us a bone here. |

Walter has the 8th edition, so maybe we need editions 1 through 7. They are listed at http://www.19icce.org/19thICCE/HistoryICCE.html or at http://icce.homepage.co.kr/info/info_02.htm _________________ argooou Ø |

I also hate to ask FiremanDan for more favors (he's helped out a lot already!), but I think we desperately need better pictures of everything. Can he borrow a camera with macro mode turned on (on my camera it looks like a tulip/flower)? Is he still working on getting the library catalog card scanned in?
Or if all else fails, can he just create a computer-representation of the card in MS Word or Paint? |

That's basically what I told him.
This may be a case of someone thinking that simply because they know the answer, others will find it.
We don't have enough information, I don't care how many times he insists we do! _________________ “It takes a thousand voices to tell a single story. ”

Check this out:
http://donwest.org/opaphid/facilityj_decoder.php
This is a decoder McPackage built for decoding Walter style number sequences. He built it just for us!
Now all we have to do is figure out what to run through it.
I will post this on the Facility J page in LGpedia in the tool box. _________________ You made a wise choice, Bree.

McPackage you are awesome!! i was gonna ask Dan to do this when he had some more spare time lol. Thanks MP!!
PS yes still going to have Dan scan the card.. I just dunno when he works again, and only has access to the scanner when he works. I'll ask him about that text today though, after his class. and he actually did type it all up with all the spacing correcting and everything originally the form ate the format though. |

Thanks McPackage! This will come in handy for those of us who were absent the day they taught arithmetic
That is so cool and soooo useful. Thank you!
Now, if only we knew what text to decode. _________________ “It takes a thousand voices to tell a single story. ”

And another probably useless observation... It may be coincidence, but ITIYETI has a very similar structure to the offsets (+8,-8,+16,-16,+16,-16,+24...):
If you group them into +8,-8|+16,-16,+16,-16|+24 then I is the first letter of each group, and T is the last.
The differences between successive letters is:
I +11 = T
T -11 = I
I + 16 = Y
Y - 20 = E
E + 15 = T
T - 11 = I
which alternates between +ve and -ve numbers the same way as the offsets do.
Well, this may be seeing patterns where there is only randomness, but I thought I'd throw this out there... _________________ Facility J: Will the last disgruntled employee to leave please destroy The Cure? |

McPackage: GREAT work! I was going to suggest that someone do this, but I had no idea whether or not the amount of work that it would entail to make would be reasonable.
This should be a huge asset. |
