My friend's baby is turning one and I have no idea what to get him for his birthday. I don't have children and the youngest kid in my family is 8. Any ideas on what to get a little boy for his firtst birthday...that isn't super expensive because I'm pretty much poor? _________________

If you have a good printer, you could print a cute picture of Donald Duck or something and buy a nice frame to it _________________ "Have you uff da'd today?" - Broken Kid |

Books are always good. Get the kid a cute story and get him started reading.
One of my absolute fave kids' books, which would be great for a one-year-old, is Sandra Boynton's immortal Hippos Go Berserk! It comes in a board-book version so the kid can chew on it and not ruin it. |

He's actually got a lot of books. His parents have ALL the baby einsteins and tons of books for him, they are both readers. _________________

As far as books go.
I think the Little Prince would make a lovely First Birthday gift.
It is a childrens book his parents can read to him now, and enjoy themsleves. and a wonderful keep sake he could keep and continue to read as he grows older.
Of course I'm a little biased toward the book. |

It's my favorite. Sami wrote: |

Which also makes nice cheap framed art work, I used a lovely inexpensive calendar. |

books are great, and cheap if you know the right place to shop.
Another good toy is anything from leap pad/lamaze. They can get pricey, so if you can shop at a second hand kids store, that'll work. They usually ahve tons of those toys.
when my daughter turned one, i think the greatest gift was for me though. It was a home spa kit. So I always encourage/buy gifts for my friends that'll pamper them and relieve stress when their kids turn 1,2 or 3. Just because they are stressful years
(i'll probably do the same when my friends kids turn 13 14 and 15. _________________ kelly

If I may make another suggestion on a book, its by no means the little prince, but it was my nephews favorite book when he was little and it was the first book he read on his own. Its called chica-chica, boom-boom. It sounds cheesy I know, but if i remember correctly it also teaches numbers... and its a nice big lamenated type paperback so its pretty cheap.
I might be really off but when I think of smart little kids I think of my nephew and that book. _________________ But you can call me chisa chan.... or cheese.
Vote 'mute in '08! - because Paris Hilton and P. Diddy will both talk about it for months without acctually doing it themselves.

Thanks for all the book ideas...but like I said he really has a lot of books already. I don't know which ones he has already and I'd kind of like to get him something a little different, kwim? _________________

oh something thats really cool:
bath toys and bath stuff.
A good thing that'll help encourage him to draw/write are soap crayons.
They are crayons that can be used i nthe tub, and they are easy clean up PLUS they are soap! my daughter has a bucket full of them.
..hmm what else...
Baby Einstein movies are also great little gifts and fairly cheap. OH and fisher price has these balls with trucks and cars and people and different stuff in them and both my kids (the baby and the four year old) LOVE them.
...hmm...what else...
Hand Print kit is always really sentimental for the mother, comes with the plaster and decorating stuff.
Fisher Price CD"s are a must (especially lullabye cd's)
Sippy Cups would be useful at that age. Stroller/high chair toys: they are toy specifically designed for teh high chair and stroller. they hook on to something and the baby will play with the for hours...
hmmmmmm....what else...OOO if they are a musical family you can get those cute mini instruments! Leap Frog ha a really neat drum that's 20 bucks here in canada (so it's prolly 15 down there) that everytime you tap it, it says a number or a letter depending on what setting you have it on...
hmmm...
i'm trying to think of unique things my dauger got for her first birthday... _________________ kelly
