No, in all honesty, I don't see great love stories as having to be about that (especially not the kind of hell she's put him through).

They don't have to be about that in real life, but in art they tend to be.

I'm sort of an opera buff, and the foursome of Daniel/Sarah/Bree/Jonas is starting to remind me of the cast of a classic opera. Bree and Jonas, at this time, are the star-crossed, noble lovers, the romantic leads; Jonas would be a tenor and Bree would be a lyric soprano. Daniel and Sarah are the earthier, more humorous pair. Daniel would be a baritone and Sarah would be a mezzo-soprano or contralto.

Sarah, in fact, is a kind of a Trickster figure, who provides the comic relief and irreverence that this story often needs.

The plot and the main foursome of characters also reminds me a bit (not TOO much) of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by Shakespeare, with a lot of mistaken identities etc.

Quote:
I see Bree as the antithesis of romance, the epitome of evil where loyalty and all-consuming love is concerned, unfit to be in a romantic relationship with anyone.

How about "Me for Daniel" where she offered herself in exchange for Daniel, and got him away from the Order?

And she would be the bass!

Nah, she could be a contralto. The main parts for contraltos in opera are "witches, b*tches, and britches [high-voiced male parts]" Wink

Hahahahaha

If there is a God in Heaven, Daniel is over Bree and will not have to endure any kind of romantic relationship with the Queen of Pain.

I misread that and for a second I thought you were referring to me. My first thought was "What?"

Even then, no. There's plenty of ways to write a love story without having one or both parties hurting the other person, lying to them, being inconsiderate of them, etc.

Nothing seemed romantic about it to me. At least she made the attempt to get him out, though (after driving him to drinking in the first place, of course).

Putting the long-tortured Daniel with the long-torturing Bree would be the most disgusting possible plot development imaginable. She's evil. I've been convinced of this for a long time. She finally did one good deed in trying to save Jules, but now she's back to form.

Classic Lurker.

I have to agree with you though. She really fucked with him. I hate it when... I don't want to write chicks, but girls sounds like I'm in fifth grade, so stick your own word here... do that. Not that it's okay for an a*****e dude to do something along the same lines to a (imagination time again).

I think it would be really fucked up for Bree and DB to get together, she would have him whipped real bad. DB has been comin' a long way to, I mean, he overcame alcoholism (even though he managed to do that in about a day or two, so either he is amazing or this is a case of bad writing. Take a guess at which one it is).

But I do not like him with Sarah either. She has him painting her friggin' toes for christ's sake.

Poor DB. I'd rather see him with Alex at this point.

But I would really like to see him stop the ceremony.

It doesn't matter who Bree ends up with. She'll still be alone - sociopaths are always alone. The Bree we see is just a shell, a mask invented to cover up a twisted, confused, angry, hateful creature with absolutely no empathy or ability to see others as anything but tools to be used to meet her needs. Whatever the Order did to her cracked the shell and allowed some of the inner weirdness to show through, but she's been slowly learning to repair the facade and seem like a human being again. Enough to fool Jonas, at any rate. I think that's why she slamdunked Owen and yelled "Stop!". What advice would a turtle give to someone who's confused and scared? "Crawl back into your shell and everything will get better". Crazy Bree finally got to come out into the light, and didn't want to go back into the depths. Bree NEEDS the Order. She's a total failure as a human being, and the Order are the only ones that have even a chance of turning her into something useful. Running around loose, she'll just keep acting inappropriately, hurting everyone who tries to get close to her, and never understanding why she's such a walking disaster.

Gotta have some kind of drama going on, though, to have a drama. Or a plot. Since this is fiction.

Desire, conflict, betrayal, defeat, victory--the world's great stories are made up of these things. There will be a resolution, happy or not, but it won't result in the needed relief, or catharsis, if it isn't the culmination of tragic events caused by human frailty.

We who watch Lonelygirl are the modern-day equivalents of a group of cave-dwellers 10,000 years ago, watching really good storytellers make up a tale and act it out as they go along. The cave is just a lot bigger nowadays Cool

You really do not like Bree, do you?

While I agree with most of your points, I think that you have exaggerated her a little bit.

And I do not think Bree was a failure, in fact, she showed that she quite a bit of intellect at her use.

But everything she touched has turned to crap.

Bree is very confusing, her personality shifts and changes into something new in almost every vid. The character is constantly reinvented, making it impossible to see into her, or even really care for her. You think to yourself, "Hmmm, that smart girl is not so bad", and before you really get to know her, she changes dramatically.

There are moments where she is very smart, and very nice, and then she just might suddenly tie you up, or sit and whine because she wants a slurpee. And now she seems to have completely lost it.

I do not get her at all. Brave, crazy, stupid, smart, then cowardly, at random times?

Or perhaps she has always been marginally insane, and she is starting to sink deeper and deeper into into it, slowly losing control of herself. The possibility that she has been given mind altering drugs and possibly hypnotized cannot be helping either.

She did talk to a stuffed monkey, frequently.

But that is more of an excuse for sloppy writing.

Of course drama's needed. I'm just saying that it's not necessary for one or more of the romantic figures to bring emotional misery upon the other(s) in order to spin a good romance. There's other forms of drama that could be tapped into.

Though I certainly think it makes their relationship stronger if there's some beef they have to work through, there's a beef and then there's a fucking meat farm.

That still leaves her as a failure in all the ways that matter, though. As you said, everything she's touched has turned to crap.

Nice analysis. That's great, actually. Well thought-out and well-worded.
