I probably shouldn't have come across so grumpy in that post, sorry. I think its good that the law in one state may progress faster than in more restrictive or conservative states, but I just have a bit of a hard time with the idea that there are so many states in the US and they are so different. With all the land there, it seems to me like those states could be different countries - in europe for example, the size of states may very well be the perfect size for a country.

Perhaps I'm not close enough to the issue to understand completely, just trying to get my head around the inconsistencies. Does America still have the death penalty in some states? Things like that I could never understand. It seemed to matter more where you committed the crime rather than what crime it was, wouldn't uniformity be simpler, in regard to criminal matters at least?

Maybe I'm a romantic, but it does seem like Jonas is the one who's most involved, even before the kissing/possible sex. Let's get to the Bree already! Mysterious phone calls, disappearances, the Order on the trail! Keep the intensity out of her pants for a second and find the girl!

Yes, in some states the death penalty still exists. Which doesn't make sense to me, either. I may be wrong, but I believe we are the only country left in the western world that DOES still use the death penalty. The only argument for the death penalty that makes any sense to me at all is to alleviate over-crowding, so they kill off the worst offenders. Which still sounds bogus to me, because there are other things they could be doing to fix the crowding. Most people that go to prison have been there before (well over half), and a lot of people go in on drug charges of one kind of another. If they had some sort of rehab program and vocational program, that would cut it down dramatically. The prison system here is pretty much broken.

And I *wish* we were a different country. That would make things so much easier. The thing is that the different political and social views vary so wildly even within the same state (even in the same city) that drawing out borders would be near impossible, although I have seen some humorous maps of what it could look like (the western states, new york, and a few other states are a part of Canada and the rest is Jesus-Land). And I doubt the mighty federal government would want to break up their military.

I can still dream, though. And as far as America goes, I'm lucky enough to live in a very good city. Very liberal, beautiful, and surprisingly cultured for having less than 500,000 residents.

ETA: I know how you feel, I am having a hard time wrapping my head around the concept that everyone in a large area might actually be on the same page about something. It actually sounds really refreshing. I also feel somewhat like I'm in a cultural bubble, cut off from the rest of the united states because we ARE so different. It's easy for me to forget that many places in America are still rife with bigotry and ignorance.

Wow... You know, Lurker... I hate to say this, but your girl is starting to get on my nerves. I will agree that sex is fun, and I believe you and I could make it extra fun, but that's goes without saying.

This video was ridiculous! Do we really need to know where all the crazy girl has scrumped. Was she talking about where's she's had sex in general, or where she's had sex IN THAT HOUSE? Anyway. I'm not digging Sarah much right now. I guess maybe the boys are digging her more though. Gotta love an easy gal.

I'm not saying that a perpetrator of multiple hate crimes could go to a class and be cured. What I am saying is that the people who are sent to jail with major drug problems could benefit from a different system for them, instead of being imprisoned, eventually released and STILL have that problem and then get arrested again because they haven't gotten the help that they need. And those that are arrested because they are SELLING drugs could also benefit from vocational programs within the jail system that gives them more options when they get out, so they don't have to go back to doing what they were doing. Most people in prison are repeat offenders because the prison system is failing them.

And I don't want to go too far into this either, but the fact that we have so many crimes per capita shouldn't be ignored, either. There's no easy fix, obviously, but I'm sure there are things that could be done. Compare violent crime in the US to violent crime in Canada. Also compare how many people view the police in the united states to how the public views them, in say, Japan (where there is a video of a very large group of people doing a dance routine illegally in the street, and 2 police officers walk up and everybody runs away. That wouldn't happen here).

I don't know much about other prison systems, admittedly, and I know our system is better than a lot of others out there. But that's no excuse to ignore the problems that do exist, and we shouldn't just accept the over-crowding and the death of prisoners as a part of life that can't be avoided because crime exists. We can work towards preventing the crimes.

And I don't see why it's outrageous to, yes, think that killing prisoners is backwards. They may be violent but they are still people, with just as much a right to life as anyone else. And I don't see why us killing them is "okay." Also take into consideration those on death row that have reformed, like the founder of the Crips who was recently put to death. I know it is rare to happen, but sometimes the prison system does a great service in changing people for the better. One example, albeit a fictional one, is Ed Norton's character in American History X (which is a great movie and I highly recommend it).
