An edit summary is a brief summary of what you're changing in the article, which appears in the page history and lets people watching the page know what you did without actually looking at the changes. It's entered in the one-line box just above the Save page button.
For instance, if you added a transcript for a video, a brief "added transcript" could be added in the edit summary. It's most useful when explaining a change others may not understand your reason for.
