Transcript

(Footage of Jonas and Daniel trying to find a clue in one of Emma's videos is seen.)

Sarah: (voice over) They haven't slept in about a week. Or showered. They have focus, I'll give them that. But, other important clues are being completely ignored. (cut to Sarah sitting on a bed) Like that guy who posted that video last night. Chris. He was at the recruitment seminar that we went to a while back. He's, uh... first chair on the project Carl's working on. It's like an orchestra, first chair means... boss of each instrument. They're big into music analogies at the Hymn of One. Anyway, when you're fighting an unknown enemy, you have to figure out his weakness, which... good for us, Carl is a judgmental ass. He told Sonia that this guy Chris has a drinking problem. He's always trying to get Carl to go down to this bar that he frequents. I told Jonas and Daniel that I wanted to go down there and see if we could get any information from him. Good idea, right? They're obsessed with cracking the code. It's all right, I'm a big girl. I can take care of it myself.

(Cut to alternating scenes of Sarah getting ready and talking on the phone, with audio of her phone conversation.)

Sarah: Yeah. No, that sounds good, but you can make it, right? Yeah, you know, I just thought it would be nice to like, you know, to hang out, get a drink. Great, okay. Yeah. Yeah, I'll see you there. (hangs up) Bye.

(Cut to Sarah outside.)

Sarah: So, Chris mentioned me in his video, along with Sonia, Daniel, and Jonas. And, well, I'm pretty sure that he'd recognize me. So, this'll go a lot more smoothly with someone who hasn't been in as many videos. I'm--

Mallory: (off camera, approaching Sarah) Hey.

Sarah: (turning to her) Hey.

Mallory: How are you? (hugs Sarah)

Sarah: Uh, good. Good. Uh...

Mallory: So, is this it?

Sarah: Yeah.

Mallory: All right.

Sarah: Thanks for meeting me.

Mallory: Well, thanks for asking me. I've been with Daniel all week and I kind of need some girl time.

Sarah: Great. Right. (gives the camera a look)

Mallory: (opening the door for Sarah) After you.

Sarah: Why, thank you, kind sir.

Mallory: You're welcome.

(Cut to Sarah sitting at a table in the bar.)

Sarah: So, Chris just got here. And, well, that's him. (points the camera toward Chris who is drinking) The weird guy sitting at the bar. I haven't exactly told Mallory why I wanted her to come down here. Well, not yet at least. I just hope she doesn't freak out. I mean, you know, she's just, has this... (turns to Mallory who is approaching) Hey.

Mallory: What? (looks at Sarah inquisitively)

(Cut to Mallory walking quickly out of the bar, with Sarah following.)

Sarah: Mallory, wait. Mallory!

Mallory: No, I'm not doing--

Sarah: Mallory, would you just listen to me for one second, okay. You don't understand.

Mallory: (stopping and turning around) I don't believe you. (turns and keeps walking)

Sarah: What are you talking about?

Mallory: (turning toward Sarah again) I think you're trying to set this up with me.

Sarah: Oh my God, are you kidding me? Calm down, okay. I'm doing this for Emma.

Mallory: You said that we were gonna come down here and have some drinks. I thought we were finally getting to be friends.

Sarah: We are! Aren't we? Listen to me. We have to stick together.

Mallory: You know what? I'm not going to be flirting with some Hymn of One guy. It could be dangerous.

Sarah: Okay, you know what, I'll be right there in case anything happens.

Mallory: No, you do it. This is not my fight.

Sarah: I can't. He'll recognize me. Mallory! Just listen, okay? Look, he doesn't know who you are, and if--you heard what he said in that video, okay? He might know where Emma is, and if we find Emma, then life goes back to normal. Daniel goes back to normal.

Mallory: I'm not doing this for you. I'm doing it for Daniel.

Sarah: Well, at least you're doing it.

(Cut to Mallory back in the bar talking to Sarah.)

Mallory: How am I gonna put this camera in my purse? I mean, I have all these things in my purse and it's so big. I don't think--

Sarah: It's a tiny camera, okay. It's gonna fit, and he's not gonna see it. It's gonna be fine.

Mallory: Fine, just give me the camera.

Sarah: Fine, here take it.

(Cut to the camera in Mallory's purse.)

Sarah: See, I told you. Look, I do this all the time. It'll be fine.

Mallory: Fine, fine. I've got it.

Sarah: Okay.

(Cut to Chris and Mallory sitting at the bar.)

Chris: All I'm saying is that he's my best friend so he should be here tonight.

Mallory: Well maybe your friend thinks you shouldn't drink so much.

Chris: Carl, please. I mean, he says things like, (in an annoying voice) It's against my principles. (normally) Whatever. There's nothing in the Hymn of One that says you can't have a little fun, right?

Mallory: I wouldn't know. I'm Presbyterian.

Chris: That's too bad. But hey, I still think you're really cool though.

Mallory: Thanks.

Chris: (moving a seat closer) You know what? Have you ever thought about the Hymn of One? I think you'd be really good in it. I have a real knack for picking these kinds of things out. You would be perfect.

Mallory: Oh, really?

Chris: Don't say no.

Mallory: Thanks....

Chris: All right. Hey, bartender, could we get two shots please?

Mallory: Oh, no, I'm actually okay. I'm good.

Chris: Just one more. That's it.

Mallory: Okay, just one.

Chris: Okay, one more.

Mallory: (taking the shot) Thanks.

Chris: Cheers.

Mallory: Cheers.

Chris: Ready?

Mallory: All right.

(They lock arms and both drink their shots in that position.)

Chris: That a girl. All right. (high fives Mallory) Yeah. Nice.

Mallory: So, um... so, what's got you so stressed out lately?

Chris: I got this thing coming up.

Mallory: Oh, yeah?

Chris: Yeah. It's a really important event that I'm working on. It's this Friday, it's really big, and not many people get a chance to do these kinds of things, but they picked (points to himself) me, Chris.

Mallory: Oh, wow.

Chris: It's a real honor.

Mallory: What kind of thing is it?

Chris: If I told you, I'd have to kill you! (Mallory laughs) I'm just kidding, I'm just kidding.

Mallory: Well, I should probably get going, um...

Chris: Really?

Mallory: Yeah, it was really nice meeting you, Chris. So, um, all right, I'll see you later.

Chris: Well, hold on. Hold on. (pointing to his cheek) A little kiss here.

Mallory: I mean, I mean. Okay, just one. Okay.

(Mallory leans in to kiss him on the cheek and he grabs her head and kisses her on the lips.)

Chris: Hey, surprise, surprise.

Mallory: (sounding freaked out) It was really good meeting you.

Chris: Okay, nice meeting you too.

Mallory: You too.

(Mallory gets up and starts to briskly walk away.)

Chris: All right. Bye.

Mallory: Bye.

Notes

  • The characters do not name their alcohol by name, perhaps to avoid unintended sponsorship.
  • It is unclear if Sarah intended to take Mallory out for alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks. If Sarah did intend to invite Mallory out for alcoholic drinks, then she would have to present a fake id at the door, as she is under the legal drinking age.
  • There are strong feminist elements in this title, and also in how Mallory uses her femininity to gain power over Chris and extract information.
  • Sarah and Mallory are on the Miracle Mile section of Wilshire Boulevard, in downtown Los Angeles.
